Fibre Cable Broken? Here’s What to Do Before Calling a Technician

One moment you’re streaming, working, or on a video call — the next, everything drops. No WiFi. No connection. Just the blinking lights on your router telling you something has gone very wrong. If you’re in Cape Town and suspect your fibre cable is broken, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common call-outs we handle at Mount-IT.

But before you grab a ladder or start wiggling cables, there are a few things you need to know — and a few things you absolutely should not do.

Signs Your Fibre Cable Might Be Broken

Fibre optic cables are incredibly fast, but they’re also delicate. A single crack, bend, or break in the glass strand inside the cable can kill your connection entirely. Here are the telltale signs:

1. Your Router Shows a Red or Flashing “LOS” Light

LOS stands for Loss of Signal. If this light is red or blinking on your ONT (the small box your fibre plugs into), it almost always means there’s a physical break somewhere in the fibre line between your home and the street cabinet.

2. Complete Internet Dropout with No Recovery

Unlike a software glitch or ISP outage, a broken fibre cable won’t fix itself by restarting your router. If you’ve rebooted everything multiple times and your connection hasn’t come back, a physical break is likely.

3. Visible Damage to the Cable

Sometimes the evidence is right in front of you. Common scenarios in Cape Town include:

  • Garden work gone wrong — a weed eater or lawnmower catches the cable where it enters the house
  • Construction or renovations — drilling into a wall nicks the fibre line
  • Storm damage — falling branches or strong southeasters pull the cable loose
  • Pets and pests — dogs chewing exposed cable runs, or rats gnawing through conduit

4. Intermittent Connection That Gets Progressively Worse

A fibre cable doesn’t always snap cleanly. Sometimes it develops a micro-bend or partial fracture. This causes intermittent dropouts that worsen over time — usually a sign the cable is damaged but not yet fully broken.

What NOT to Do When Your Fibre Cable Is Broken

This is important. Fibre optic cable is not like electrical wiring or a TV aerial cable. Here’s what you should avoid:

❌ Don’t Touch or Try to Splice the Cable Yourself

Fibre cables contain hair-thin strands of glass. You cannot strip, twist, or tape them back together like copper wire. Repairing fibre requires a fusion splicer — a specialised machine that precisely aligns and fuses the glass strands using an electric arc. This equipment costs upwards of R50,000 and requires trained hands to operate.

If you try to DIY it, you’ll almost certainly make the problem worse and potentially create a longer (more expensive) repair.

❌ Don’t Yank or Pull on the Cable

If the cable is hanging loose or partially detached, resist the urge to pull it tight or reposition it. You could extend the break further along the line or damage the connector where it enters your ONT.

❌ Don’t Assume It’s Your ISP’s Problem

Here’s something many Cape Town residents don’t realise: your ISP (Afrihost, Cool Ideas, RSAWEB, Webafrica, etc.) provides the internet service, but the physical fibre line is owned by the network operator (Openserve, Vumatel, Octotel, etc.). And the section of cable from the boundary box to inside your home? That’s often considered your responsibility.

This means logging a fault with your ISP can result in a long back-and-forth while they determine whether the issue is on their side or yours. Many customers wait days — sometimes over a week — only to be told they need a private technician anyway.

❌ Don’t Wait for It to Fix Itself

A broken fibre cable will not recover on its own. The longer you wait, the longer you’re without internet — and in many work-from-home setups, that means lost income.

When to Call a Fibre Repair Technician

Call a professional fibre technician when:

  • Your ONT shows a red LOS light that persists after rebooting
  • You can see visible damage to the fibre cable
  • Your ISP confirms the issue is on your side of the network
  • You’ve been waiting more than 24 hours with no resolution from your ISP
  • You need your connection restored urgently (working from home, security cameras offline, etc.)

What to Expect from a Professional Fibre Repair

When you book a fibre repair with Mount-IT, here’s how the process typically works:

Step 1: Diagnosis

Our technician arrives and uses an optical power meter or visual fault locator to pinpoint exactly where the break is. This red-light laser tool makes the damaged section glow visibly, even inside conduit.

Step 2: Repair or Replacement

Depending on the extent of the damage, we’ll either:

  • Fusion splice the break — joining the fibre strands with a precision splicer for a permanent, low-loss repair
  • Replace the cable section — if the damage is too extensive or the cable has multiple breaks, we run a new fibre line from your boundary box to your ONT

Step 3: Testing and Verification

After the repair, we test the line with an optical power meter to confirm signal strength is within specification. We verify your router is online, your connection is stable, and your speeds are back to normal.

Step 4: Cable Management

We secure and protect the repaired or replaced cable to prevent future damage — using conduit, cable clips, and neat routing along walls or under eaves.
